ProtonVPN is one of the newer VPNs, launched in 2017 by the same team that built ProtonMail. In the same month, it expanded VPN service to five new countries - Cambodia, Egypt, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Vietnam - for a total of 61 countries served. The most recent meaningful changes came in October 2021, when ProtonVPN enabled WireGuard for all users and made it the default VPN protocol.
